Sweetly Broken…

The malls and parking lots are jammed full – our minds are calculating how to wrap the presents in our closet and sneak them beneath the tree. But let’s not forget… never, never, let us forget. Our humble King, stepping down among us.

Sweetly Broken//Jeremy Riddle

To the cross I look, to the cross I cling
Of its suffering I do drink
Of its work I do sing

For on it my Savior both bruised and crushed
Showed that God is love
And God is just

Chorus:
At the cross You beckon me
You draw me gently to my knees, and I am
Lost for words, so lost in love,
I’m sweetly broken, wholly surrendered

What a priceless gift, undeserved life
Have I been given
Through Christ crucified

You’ve called me out of death
You’ve called me into life
And I was under Your wrath
Now through the cross I’m reconciled

In awe of the cross I must confess
How wondrous Your redeeming love and
How great is Your faithfulness

Emmanuel

Imagine…

Walking down the street in the frigid cold, wrapped in a dark coat. A red scarf swinging around your neck as you stride. The rushing of cars driving by and the crunching footsteps of people on the sidewalk. One man walks by you – no different than the rest. He smiles at you as you continue past and you pause for a moment, turning to watch him. Would you shrug it off and continue? Or would you realize…. He is your Maker.

Emmanuel is similar to thinking of eternity in heaven, at least to me. The idea that God took on human flesh and walked among us on Earth – it gives me the shivers. And I wonder what it would be like, to be one of the thousands of people that saw or met or talked with him the short 30 years he dwelt on this fallen, dusty earth.

Would you be able to tell? Could you look in his face and see in that moment the unfathomable LOVE he has for you? That the reason he stands there, before you, is because he has been chasing you your whole life – a passionate pursuit?

Perhaps as humans we have grown so used to shutting our ears to His calling and to the song of the universe, that we wouldn’t even noticed if God walked past us. We wouldn’t even blink, or feel the tug because we’ve numbed it our whole life.

Yet He came. Such glory He is, such beauty He is. How ugly we are. We shut our ears to everything He said, denying His message, and finally “silencing” it in our anger. It is finished. He is risen. Love is here – hope has come.

Emmanuel. God is with us. May you dwell in His presence especially this season.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world…

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth…

From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another…

No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.

The temperature has been hovering well below 30 lately – this morning it was in the teens. A large tub filled to the brim with rainwater sits in the pasture, so frozen you could ice skate on it! We are mainly untouched by the freezing cold indoors, our house kept (fairly) warm by our wood-burning stove. All of the wood-chopping my older brother has done through the summer is now paying off! Unfortunately our water system’s frozen right now… Upside? I don’t have to do the dishes! =D

With all of this cold my mind turns to the future. One year in the future, to be exact. I wonder how warm it will be in Missouri, where my college choice resides. It’s more south, but will probably not escape from the cold drafts and snow of winter!

This Christmas will probably be the last (for a while more, at least) when our whole family is together as well. My brother leaves end of January to start BASIC training in the army. I will (hopefully) be gone around July/August next year as well, starting to work hard to pay off my college room and board. There probably won’t be many presents under the tree – not nearly as many as in previous years. But I still hope our entire family cherishes this time together.

I hope your family has a marvelous Christmas as well. Cherish it, enjoy it, and display the love that you have towards one another.
=) Merry Christmas!
