If you believe in evolution as Darwin described it, what sort of worldview should you then have?

“In the universe of blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, and other people are going to get lucky; and you won’t find any rhyme or reason to it, nor any justice. The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is at the bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good. Nothing but blind pitiless indifference. DNA neither knows nor cares. DNA just is, and we dance to its music.”

-Richard Dawkins

“Man is the result of a purposeless and natural process that did not have him in mind.”

-George Gaylord Simpson

“Homo sapiens is but a tiny, late-arising twig on life’s enormously arborescent bush—a small bud that would almost surely not appear a second time if we could replant the bush from seed and let it grow again.”

-Stephen Jay Gould

“…if this book [Origin of the Species] were to find general public acceptance, it would bring with it a brutalisation of the human race such as it had never seen before.”

-Adam Sedgwick

“Darwin stood for me like a mighty doorkeeper at the entrance to the temple of the universe.”

-Leon Trotsky, Russian Communist

“To Charles Darwin from a devoted admirer.”

-Karl Marx in a copy of his Das Kapital

Darwinism also influenced Hitler, Stalin, and Margaret Sanger.

“By reducing humans to mere animals, by stressing human inequality, and by viewing the death of many ‘unfit’ organisms as a necessary – and even progressive – natural phenomenon, Darwinism made the death of the ‘inferior’ seem inevitable and even beneficent.”

-Richard Weikart

What you believe about the origin of humans, this earth, and the universe makes a huge difference. Seriously, if you believe in natural selection and survival of the fittest, why not support eugenics? Why not put yourself first in every lifechoice? Why care about other humans at all?

I really am curious – if you believe in evolution and are reading this, what are your reasons for good morals?
